In the postwar (The Second World War) era, Georgian film making and theatre developed an outstanding reputation in the Soviet Union. Several Georgian filmmakers achieved international recognition in this period. In 1993, despite chaotic political conditio ns, Tbilisi hosted the Golden Eagle Film Festival of the Black Sea Basin Countries, Georgia's first international film festival. Georgia is also famous for its theatrical art. The Tbilisi Rustaveli Theatre has been acclaimed internationally for its performances (in Georgian) on the works of William Shakespeare and the German drama writer Bertold Brecht.

The name of the Rustaveli Theatre is covered with especial halo in Georgia and abroad and it is connected with real art, solemn theatricality and celebration show. The theatre is justly known with its excellent actors and professional producers that are making now, as they did in the past, modern, problematic and alive perfomances. The Rustaveli theatre is often called abroad as the theatre of stars because of the great number of its talented actors. The unique feature of the theatre is its everlasting youth and searching soul. During the whole century new theatrical courses were formed here as well as new theatrical forms full of national meaning and expression. the secret of everlasting attractiveness of the theatre can be found in its creative and civic convictions.Outstanding Georgian writers and cultural workers were standing at the begining of the theatre putting great national and artistic problems in front of themselves - the theatre had to be the place of Georgian social thought, national consciousness and culture. The Rustaveli Theatre loaded with such difficult mission began to work on its nation's spiritual culture. The best modern and clasical models of Georgian and foreign authors were being performed. Each director at their theatre had his own and unique handwriting. each play was distinguished with its clear aim and aesthetic principles.Although the theatre was desribing rhythm of the epoch, it was devoted to the highest principles of art too. This very feature makes the theatre to live the whole century. Marjanisgvili's perfect plays full of inner intensity and fixed with one nerve (Fuenta Ovejuna in 1922, Antonov's Solar Eclipse in Georgia in 1923, Hamlet in 1925) were followed by Akhmeteli's light, sharp, strong and clever creativity -"national in its form but common to all mankind to its soul". Civil credo, youthful energy, director's moderation and professional exactness made his plays more dazzling and semantically perfect Disorganisation by Lavrenev in 1928, Anzori by Shanshiashvili in 1928, Lamara by Robakidze in 1930, Tetnuldi by Dadiani in 1931). Each of these plays had its own artistic beauty.

The Rustaveli Theatre could not avoid historical mistortunes as well. The totals state machine mercilessly suppressed the freedom of artistic expression, but the theatre still survived and even at that very difficult time was full of excellent achievements especially by the actors who were defending the honour of their theatre and in their own way and sometimes unintentionally expressed the truth of their untruthful life.A new creative rising was noticed after a little political softening in the century. It was clear that the theatre's stylistics and aesthetics had to be changed. The strengthening of that process was shown Tumanishvili's play-manifesto - People, be Careful. New aesthetics meant pure theatricality, conditionality, underlined artistism, grotesque as one form of theatrical expression. Celebrations, free humor, real pictures of people's fortune returned to the theatre. Mikhail Tumanishvili's performances Spanish Priest by Fletcher in 1954, Chinchraka in 1963, When there is Such Love in 1959, Antigone in 1968) with their professional high level, perfect stylistics, problems and theatrical forms were establishing new culture and modern thinking in the theatre.Such traditions and artistic culture presided the period of 1960-1970 years Temur Chkheidze's and Robert Sturua's well-known plays were made. In 1972 Temur Chkheidze produced Shalva Dadiani's People of Yesterday. The play was new reserch of moral present and lives of Georgian people. The play attracted attention with its artistic and stage decisions and unusual characters too. The performance ruthlessly showed the decay of enslaved people. Well-known Bernanda Alba's House by Garcia Lorka was staged by the same director. The art spoke loudly of deformed social and political life. It began to show despotic manner of the state. The theatre expressed the civil thoughts and made spectators the judges of this evil. Robert Sturua's Kvarkvare (P.Kakabadze) made great stress on people who were not accustomed to such sharp satire. The merciless satire and grotesque became the weapon in destroying myths. The whole wretchedness of outstanding political figures was shown in the play.- the holly talent of men - laughter - rose high above fear and laughless tyranny. Drama became farce and tragedy - tragedy-farce. The director's thinking gave birth to generalised masks, which live in stage carnival world. The director's sharp eye saw and showed us schemes of life that were hidden in the darkness of past epoch. Robert Sturua comical irrelevance of life phenomenon and their tragic inevitability stand together and spectators used to change from passive participators into free judges.Sturua's performance The Caucasian Chalk Circle (1975), Richard III (1979), King Lear (1987) speaks with various genres, doses of liric or psychological portrait. They made celebrations in the theatre models of life and myths of being and all these realises one of the most astonishing character of the theatre - prognostication.During hard 90ths the Rustaveli Theatre has not stopped working, it produced a number of performances, trying to express the role of modern epoch, to find the new sources and means for artistic expression, it is looking for the eternal values and aspirations. Actors and artistic director Robert Sturua are making experimental performances. ABC is the performance based on Georgian alphabet. The Life is a Dream (perfomed in Sevilia - EXPO - 92), The Kind Man from Sechuan, Macbeth, Lamara, Lilac Tree, Woman - Snake, Irine's happiness - is not the full list of theatre works created lately.
